Last thoughts
Hawkeye looked down one last time at this huge‚Goodbye‘, his friend BJ
Hunnicutt had laid out for him with stones on the ground. Then he smiled and leant
back.
This was it...
The war was over...
His dreams had finally come true.
He should be happy, happy to leave this dumpster and finally go home.
But B.F. Pierce wasn’t happy at all.
Sure, he was anxious to see his father again in Crab Apple Cove, but it wasn’t
exactly happiness what he felt.
He knew as bad as he wanted to go home, as much would he miss the people, his
friends...his home away from home...for such a long time.
Hawkeye felt that part of him was still down there. Up here in the chopper he felt a
gap starting to grow inside of him.
They had promised each other to stay in touch, but would they really call? Did Hawk
want them to call? He sighed. This was so confusing.
The Captain looked at the chopper pilot beside him. And suddenly, he had to fight
down the feeling to ask the pilot to turn again and fly back.
“I’m going home... he muttered to himself.
“Excuse me? the Lieutenant asked, thinking Hawkeye had addressed him.
“Nothing, Lieutenant. I just still can’t believe it...
The pilot nodded, as though he’d understand. But Pierce was sure that this guy
had no idea.
Suddenly, a flash appeared in his memory.
Henry.
Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake, first commanding officer of MASH 4077.
Died on his way home.
Hawk closed his eyes. This memory still hurt, bad. They were so happy on that day
for Henry, yet a little jealous that he went home.
Later on that day, wounded came and they were all doing their shares in the OR. They
were talking about where Henry would be at that special moment, making jokes...
Until Radar came in, telling them that Henry’s plane was shot down and that there
were no survivors...
Never in his life had Hawkeye felt such a deep pain in his heart and soul as in that
moment.
This damn war had cost so many innocent lives...
Men, women and children...
Soldiers and civilians...
Officially, the war was finally over now.
But for Hawkeye Pierce, it wasn’t...
