Past, Present and Future
Silently, a man stands at a grave, looking down, reading the name over and over
again: Evan Cortez. Almost a year has passed since he died, shot by McNair on an
undercover assignment in Las Vegas.
So much time passed.
So many things changed.
He, Harvey Leek, has a new partner, Antwon Babcock. It took some time for
Harvey to accept the new face sitting at the familiar desk, the desk Evan used to
work at. It took some time for him for not feeling guilty every time he looked up,
expecting Evan’s face to be there, realising that his best friend was dead.
He had been too slow.
It was mostly his fault.
Evan was too far ahead for Harvey to take any part at all in the shoot-out which led
to Evan’s death.
So much time…
“Forgive me, man, that I haven’t been here in a while…, Harvey
mumbles, picking up some leaves from the grave stone.
It had taken him some time to visit his partner’s grave after the funeral. He felt as
if he couldn’t stand it, reading the letters which spelled Evan’s name.
Sometimes he still can’t stand Cassidy’s presence at work. He still feels that
she partly blames him for what happened. It was the day she and Evan wanted to get
married. But instead of a wedding, Cassidy was forced to attend a funeral.
Her lover’s funeral.
Harvey thinks back to the inevitable phone call to Chicago, to Evan’s sister.
Nash offered to make that call for him, but he refused. It was his duty to be the one
to tell her. He knew Evan better than anybody else at the SIU, except maybe for
Cassidy. But even if it took him a long time to get used to the fact that Evan Cortez
was dead, everybody’s life, his life had to go on. Harvey even allowed himself
to have some fun again. He learned that it was his partner who was dead, not
Harvey Leek.
Harvey sighs heavily and turns to go. Antwon is waiting in the car. Can’t let him
wait too long.
Just one look back.
“I miss you, man…
The End…
