Old and New at SIU
Bryn Carson watched her colleague, Inspector Harvey Leek, on his way to the coffee
machine and felt like she was having déjà -vu. She stood up and went over to him.
“Hey, Harv, how much have you had so far? she asked, leaning against the
table, her arms folded across her chest.
He looked at her, tired. “Dunno, stopped counting couple o’ hours ago.
He yawned.
The woman smiled sympathetically at him. “Why don’t you go home and get
some sleep?
Harvey shook his head, determined. “For one thing ‘cause I promised Nash to
finish these statistics till end of shift. And I don’t wanna miss the party tonight.
He took a deep breath and rubbed his eyes, almost spilling some of the hot amber
liquid in his mug. “I’m fine, really. Thanks for caring. Harvey gave her a
little smile and returned to his desk where he buried his head in paperwork again.
Bryn sighed. Sometimes you couldn’t help him, no matter how hard you might
try. She knew that his wife, Bonnie, had left him on Christmas Eve. Harvey was
taking it very hard. He had truly loved her and Bryn and various other SIU members
had been witnesses to his attempts to save his marriage. Carson shook her head and
realised that she was watching Leek. He really looked tired and probably hadn’t
slept in days. The female inspector glanced at her watch. It was shortly past three p.
m. and there was plenty of time to get Leek to catch some Z’s.
Bryn thought for a moment and developed a plan, before she went over to Evan
Cortez. “Hey, Cortez! You wanna help me?
Evan smiled brightly. He could tell his co-worker was up to something. “Sure,
what’s up? he replied.
The woman leant closer. “It’s about Leek, she whispered and piqued the
young inspector’s interest even more. “You noticed anything about him lately?

Evan cocked an eye and looked over to his partner. “You mean apart from him
spending more time here than you and me together? He smiled his boyish smile
again. “What’s the plan? he asked.
“Well, knocking him out would probably be a little to much…but we have to get
him to sleep a little.
Figuring out how was the catch with her plan. But it would soon show that Evan and
Bryn needn’t have worried about it any longer.
Suddenly, everything went very fast. Someone cried “Gun! and everybody
ducked for cover. When Bryn glanced over the edge of the desk she was hiding
behind, she saw Harvey Leek pointing a gun into nowhere.
“Stay where you are! he ordered an invisible enemy.
“Harv, man, put down the gun! Joe Dominguez told him, but instead of
following that order, Leek pointed the gun at the Mexican Inspector.
It was a delicate situation. Nobody dared to move. They were afraid Harvey would
accidentally shoot somebody, and also scared as they didn’t know what was
wrong with their fellow colleague.
Harvey’s back was towards Bryn, Evan and Nash. Bridges had been at the
holding cells, interviewing a suspect when this had started. He came out of his cover
and carefully approached Harvey. When he was standing behind him, he tapped Leekâ
€™s shoulder. The inspector turned around and Bridges’ fist met Leek’s jaw.
For a second, Harvey saw stars exploding in front of his eyes, then everything went
black and he fell down, unconscious.
“Joe, Evan, get Harv into holding and let him sleep! Nash sighed and massaged
his right hand.
“What was wrong with him? Dominguez asked while lifting Leek’s body.
He was heavier than usual due to the unconsciousness and was giving them a hard
time.
“He probably hallucinated. Hasn’t slept in days, Nash explained with
sympathy in his voice.
“I’ll get some ice for his jaw, Bryn mumbled and hurried off.
A few hours later, shortly before midnight, a big party was on. All around the SIU
ferry people were laughing and dancing, enjoying each other. Some were sunk deeply
in conversation. Bryn glanced at the clock on the wall.
“Time to wake Harv up, she thought and went towards the holding cells. Back
there all sounds from the party seemed muffled. It was as if this part of the ship wasnâ
€™t part of the Special Investigations Unit.
Bryn opened the cell door and went closer to her sleeping co-worker and friend. For a
moment, she simply stood there and watched him sleep. He looked peaceful and at
rest. Carson decided not to wake him up.
“Happy New Year, she whispered and gently kissed his forehead. Then she
silently went back to the others to celebrate the arrival of the new year with her
friends, leaving a sleeping Harvey leek behind.
